Keep the forum!

Hello all
I see Ishimaru is closing, why? I know Katt is leaving forumotion, but can't you keep this board open, perhaps under the adminship of someone else? We have 7K+ posts and 150 members, this is a real community.

If you close, where will we all go...? A thriving board like this is a hard find on the internet, and you have offered us all great support! So I propose to you: Instead of deleting this wonderful community, perhaps you could pass on the "keys" to someone else to manage and continue this board? I am willing to help, mainly in the english parts (mon Francaise c'est tres mal!- my french is very bad) and someone else could do the french parts, like a joint cooperation?

Sorry! j'ai loupé un episode!

When I sent this newsletter last night, I did it with the intention to do everything in the same time, and I was afraid of some potential reaction who finally didn't happen... I was afraid for my board, because it's really not easy to be stuck between two clans who are opposed to each other.

If I keep the forum, then some changes will be needed to ensure its future, such as spreading our services to non-Forumotion sites, if one day we move to another host. I still have all .xcf files of the skin, so I can mofidy the logo and ad kits anytime. If you are ok for an adaptation of the services, then I will reconsider my decision and I will restore the board such as it was before I changed the permissions and sent the newsletter and I will announce it.

About hosting, I am open to suggestions, especially for multilingual ones. I have knowledge in XHTML/CSS, but I did only a little overview of PHP tutorials and I know nothing in javascript. I have never used a FTP account and I have never runned a phpBB forum we host ourselves.

I know an excellent host you can use for your site, do you have a domain? If not, for 250 posts you get a free .info domain

All you need to do is make 10 posts, then apply, and the admins will make you an account with 150MB of space. Or, if you prefer, you can get a subdomain, eg. ishimaru-design.srhost.info

Katt, I have run phpbb and SMF sites before; I can set one up easily for you. One thing is that I am not sure if .xcf files work in full phpbb...

As for being open for all phpbb boards, this is an excellent move:

Your potential audience goes from around 50,000 (forumotion) to 400,000+ (the whole of the phpbb community) so the site could definitely get larger, and I know some people on Stonerocket who would happily help you design a proper site and everything...

So, would you consider moving to stonerocket (no ads too ) and creating a new Ishimaru-Design for all? A new adaption would be excellent!

.XCF files are native Gimp files, as well as .PSD are Photoshop's native files. I talk about .XCF files because with them, I keep the layers (layers are like sheet who contain one image element each, to form the final image), so I can modify the image quickly. When the modification is done, I export them into .PNG format. The banner, the buttons, icons, background images you see on this board are in .PNG format.

To get your current theme, I am gathering that you have all the buttons and stuff on your harddrive...? Because you need a copy of EVERYTHING, and then a copy of the CSS. Then with that you could download a copy of subsilver (the default theme of phpBB2) then swap the images over, and change the CSS. I myself have never done this before so I don't know if that would work...

My forum host is www.freehostia.com (250 Mb diskspace), but there's a problem with phpbb3, I don't know where this comes from :/

Concerning the design, we can use this one, I should be able to adapt it to phpbb with no major problems
SMF is a great forum provider too, but it's kinda hard to customize it, ain't it ? (I see you kept the original skin).

Concerning the website, I guess I can help a little with PHP (no Javascript though)
The FTP accounts are really easy to use, once you open an account you receive all the info by mail, so no need to worry about this ^^

I've been with stonerocket for months, they are the best ive seen. Although 150MB seems small, it is more than enough to set up a site, forum, image gallery + more One issue with SMF is the sloppy coding, if you install ANY mods, then you have to use the SMF default, as they don't install the mods on any other theme (a big pain!).

I myself are not good at making themes at all, so its good to see someone can do it

Yes, I still have all skin elements in my second hard drive. Even before I get these computer problems, I used to store my graphic stuff in my second hard drive (200MB), so I didn't lose anything when I had my 40MB changed, and I had time to do the last backups (especially music) when the problem began.

I don't know if I need to download a FTP client to manage a stonerocket account, but if this is needed, I'll download Filezilla (GNU powaaa)

About the kind of platform, I am used to phpBB based forums, so my choice goes to phpBB.

En gros : Katt, ainsi que beaucoup du staff, rencontre des problemes avec les salariés du FDF.
Et comme elle quitte FA, elle a dis sur le support anglais qu'elle fermerait eventuellement ID

You can use FTP for stonerocket accounts, and you can also upload files via the cPanel (the main admin console of the whole site). If you were to upload a whole theme, you would need to compact it into a .zip then upload, then unzip in cPanel.

I'm trying to register to Stonerocket, but when all infos are correct with the right pictured checked, I get on a blank page after I submit Is there currently a temporary bug ?

What part are you applying thru?

Go to the forums, register, make 10 posts, then you can apply thru there.

En fait, AO Admin a montré un hébergeur plutôt salivant a katt, mais elle est incapable de s'y inscrire. De ce fait, il lui a proposé d'appuyer sur f5 (pour effacer les coockies, je crois) et d'utiliser une autre application pour naviguer sur le net. (FF, IE7, etc...)

Pourquoi le forum déménage, ce n'est pas vraiment clair, mais je crois qu'il y a eu des problèmes avec forumactif et leur staff... Mais ça, quelqu'un pourra te l'expliquer.

OK, pourquoi ne pas garder celui que Katt se sert pour héberger son site ?
